BUFORD — Two Buford residents were killed Thursday morning when a tree crashed into their home, according to Gwinnett Fire & Emergency Services.

The couple was likely asleep, said Captain Tommy Rutledge, when a massive hardwood tree fell over the roof of their home and collapsed most of the roof’s structure, pinning both residents to their bed.

Reports indicate the victims were newlyweds in their 20s. Their home is located in the 500 block of West Garner Street NE in Buford.

Rutledge said the couple was found by the brother of the male victim.

“Just a very tragic situation for this family and this community,” he said. “This is an example of how powerful the winds were that moved through our area.”

The bodies of the victims were recovered and turned over to the medical examiner’s office. Family members were at the scene talking with fire officials, however, the names of the victims have not been released.
