Two swimmers rescued, third drowns near Sunset Cove on Lake Lanier

LAKE LANIER, HALL COUNTY — Three swimmers got into trouble on Sunday evening after swimming off of a rented pontoon boat on Lake Lanier.  Two swimmers were rescued but a third was not able to be rescued.

The incident occurred near Sunset Cove Marina on Sunday at approximately 6 p.m.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the swimmers could not make it back to their rented pontoon boat because of the wind.

Two people were able to be rescued but a third person went under the water and never resurfaced.

Hall County Fire Services was the first to search for the missing swimmer using sonar.  They then turned the search over to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.  DNR searched until it was dark and was forced to call off the search for the night.

The search will resume on Monday at 7:30 a.m.

The name of the victim has yet to be released.
