BUFORD — An unknown person called the Gwinnett Police Department around 1 p.m. today to report that multiple explosive devices had been placed in the Mall of Georgia located at 3333 Buford Drive in Buford, Ga. The caller said that the devices were set to detonate in three hours.
A quick response was launched which included units from the Gwinnett PD, Gwinnett Sheriff’s Office, and Gwinnett Fire & Emergency Services. Officers and deputies teamed up to search the entire interior of the mall. K9 units were also deployed to assist in the search on the ground while Gwinnett PD helicopter, Air1 searched the exterior from above. Detectives also responded to begin the criminal investigation.
Mall of Georgia management elected to keep the mall open during the search for any possible threat. Shortly before 4 p.m., the search was complete and no suspicious packages or devices were found. The scene was terminated and first responders were dispatched back to regular duty.
“Detectives will follow up with the investigation over the coming days,” said Corporal Wilbert Rundles, public information officer for the Gwinnett County Police Department.
