The Gwinnett County Police Department released new details about the SWAT call that took place on Sunday, April 28, 2019, on Arden Drive in Buford, GA. The suspect has been identified as Nathan Workman, age 19 from Buford. Nathan is currently at the Gwinnett County Jail facing warrants for Theft by Taking (Motor Vehicle), Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm or Knife during the Commission of a Felony.
More details were provided when investigators were able to interview Nathan’s family and girlfriend. Those details provided police with the events which led up to the SWAT call.
On Friday, April 26, a Hall County deputy asked for a Gwinnett County Police Officer to meet him in reference to a hit and run investigation that occurred in their jurisdiction. The officers responded to 4699 Arden Drive in Buford.
Law enforcement was able to meet with the owner of the vehicle. The owner stated that she woke up and found her vehicle and her brother, Nathan Workman were missing. The vehicle was later found in front of a home on Bryant Road in Buford. A Gwinnett County police officer obtained a warrant for Nathan Workman for Theft by Taking (Motor Vehicle) but at that time his whereabouts were unknown.
At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, Workman picked up his girlfriend at a home improvement store in Suwanee, GA. The girlfriend saw the handle of a firearm hanging out of his pocket. Workman began to drive erratically and he refused to let her get out of the vehicle. The pair drove around for a while and eventually left the vehicle at the convenience store at Pebblebrook Drive and Thompson Mill Road in Buford.
The two began to walk on a trail behind the store. She said she attempted to leave and he put his hands around her neck and began to strangle her. He only let go as she was about to lose consciousness. Workman kept them in the woods until the early morning hours. He then walked them to his grandmother’s house located in the 4600 block of Arden Drive. His girlfriend said he went to sleep and she took that opportunity to flee. She went back to the convenience store and called her parents.
The girlfriend’s parents eventually called 9-1-1 which began the chain of events leading up to the SWAT call. Because Nathan and his girlfriend share a child together, this case is considered an act of Family Violence.
Officers obtained a search warrant for the Arden Drive home after Workman’s arrest to search for evidence in reference to previous incidents. Gwinnett County says that “due to the continuing nature of this investigation, additional charges could be obtained at a later time.”
Workman had a hit and run warrant out of Hall County as well.
