SUGAR HILL, Ga. — The City of Sugar Hill has been designated an Excellence in Policing–certified city through a program administered by the Georgia Municipal Association and the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, according to a press release from Sugar Hill Chief Marshal Andy Smith.
The certification recognizes the city’s law enforcement agency for meeting standards related to departmental policies, risk reduction, and community engagement.

The Excellence in Policing Program provides a certification framework designed to help law enforcement agencies strengthen procedures, adopt contemporary best practices, and improve public trust, according to the release. The certification can also serve as a step toward Georgia Law Enforcement Certification.
“This certification represents our promise to the City of Sugar Hill that every decision, every interaction, and every policy is guided by integrity, accountability, and respect for our community,” Smith said in the release.
The program was developed by the Georgia Municipal Association in collaboration with the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police and Local Government Risk Management Services to support law enforcement agencies across the state in improving officer safety, reducing liability, and strengthening public confidence.
GMA CEO and Executive Director Larry Hanson congratulated Sugar Hill on the achievement.“By achieving this certification, Sugar Hill is demonstrating its leadership in public safety and ensuring high standards for its officers and residents,” Hanson said.
Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police Executive Director Butch Ayers said the certification marks an important milestone for the department.“This certification reflects a commitment to best practices, officer wellness, and risk reduction,” Ayers said.
The Excellence in Policing Program is available to cities that participate in the Georgia Municipal Association’s property and liability program, the Georgia Interlocal Risk Management Agency.
