The 2025-26 school year will go down in Buford High School’s history as one of the most successful and memorable. All of the countless hours that its staff and athletes spent honing their skills paid off. Buford received notice that they won this year’s prestigious Director’s Cup for Class AAAAAA. It is Buford’s fourth time winning the award and the first one since the 2021-22 school year.
Presented annually by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association, the Director’s Cup recognizes the school with the highest cumulative athletic achievement in each classification. Schools earn points based on their teams’ finishes in state competition throughout the year, with separate honors also awarded to the top boys and girls athletic programs. Thanks to the points accumulated by several noteworthy performances this year, Buford had enough points to capture this year’s Director’s Cup.
Buford finished with 1,297 points, narrowly surpassing defending champion Walton, which totaled 1,266 points. West Forsyth (1,249), Carrollton (1,230) and North Gwinnett (1,228) rounded out the top five. Buford’s girls programs contributed 675 points, finishing second behind Walton’s 696. On the boys side, Buford tied West Forsyth for second place with 622 points, while Carrollton led the classification with 653.
Leading the way for the Wolves were state championship seasons from softball, football, boys lacrosse and girls track and field. Those four titles played a major role in the Director’s Cup race, but they tell only part of the story. Across every season, Buford teams consistently competed at a high level, with numerous programs making deep postseason runs and earning strong finishes at the state level. It was truly a department-wide effort, with athletes and coaches across all sports contributing to the championship season.
While the Director’s Cup recognizes overall athletic success, the award is really a reflection of the dedication shown by hundreds of student-athletes throughout the year. From summer workouts and early morning practices to late-night bus rides and postseason competition, Buford athletes embraced the challenge of representing their school at the highest level. Their commitment, perseverance and team-first mentality helped make the 2025-26 school year one of the most successful in Buford athletics history.
