PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga. — A Gwinnett County police officer has been fired and charged following a crash that seriously injured a child and an adult earlier this month, the department announced Thursday.
Former Officer Myles Green faces charges of reckless driving, failure to obey a traffic control device and serious injury by vehicle. He was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail and released Thursday, according to jail records.
The crash occurred June 5 at Peachtree Parkway and Holcomb Bridge Road in Peachtree Corners.
Green was traveling south on Peachtree Parkway while responding to a reported shooting when he entered the intersection against a traffic signal, according to police. His patrol vehicle struck a Hyundai Kona traveling north on Peachtree Parkway as its driver turned left onto Holcomb Bridge Road.
A child and an adult passenger in the Kona suffered serious injuries. The driver and another child sustained minor injuries.
The seriously injured child was taken to Arthur M. Blank Hospital, while the other occupants were transported to Northside Hospital for treatment.
An internal investigation found that Green entered the intersection without first stopping and ensuring it was clear, Cpl. Angela Carter said. Department policy requires officers responding to emergency calls to stop completely and determine the right of way before proceeding through an intersection against a traffic signal.
Green was fired Monday.
“The Gwinnett County Police Department is committed to serving our community with professionalism, integrity and accountability,” Police Chief J.D. McClure said. “Protecting lives and property remains central to our mission, and that commitment extends to every person traveling our roadways.”
The Georgia State Patrol is conducting a separate investigation into the crash and obtained warrants for Green’s arrest.
