Looking back: Buford High School Class of 2026 graduation marked a year of defining moments

BUFORD, Ga. — When the Buford High School Class of 2026 crossed the stage May 22 at Buford Arena, the ceremony marked more than the end of high school.

The commencement served as a final reflection on a senior year shaped by championships, academic achievement, artistic excellence and the question of what legacy the class would leave behind.

As diplomas were awarded and tassels turned, the ceremony celebrated a class that continued Buford’s tradition of excellence while reminding graduates that their greatest accomplishments still lie ahead.

Senior Caleb Watson opened the ceremony by thanking parents, educators, community leaders and mentors whose support helped shape the graduating class.

“Tonight is not simply the conclusion of our high school story, but rather the beginning of the next chapter,” Watson said.

Reflecting on four years marked by state championships, academic success, artistic achievements and leadership opportunities, Watson acknowledged the expectations that accompany attending Buford High School.

“At Buford, we understand expectations. We understand standards. We understand what it means to follow the legacy left by those who came before us,” he said. “Now, however, we are faced with a different question: What legacy will we leave?”

That question became the central theme of the evening.

Superintendent Dr. Amy Chafin told graduates that excellence had become more than a goal for the Class of 2026 — it had become their standard.

“There is a weight to the word excellence in this city,” Chafin said. “To some, it is a daunting pressure. But to the Class of 2026, it has simply been the baseline.”

She reflected on a senior class whose accomplishments stretched across every corner of campus. The Literary Team captured another state championship. The theater department earned a state title with its production of Urinetown. Music students achieved record numbers of All-State selections. The football team finished as undefeated state champions and earned a national No. 1 ranking, while the softball team completed a perfect 36-0 season. The class also produced a school-record 63 athletic scholarship signees.

In the classroom, students continued Buford’s tradition of academic excellence through state and national honors, Advanced Placement success and leadership across numerous organizations.

Drawing from a quote by Confucius, Chafin reminded graduates that extraordinary accomplishments are built through consistent effort.

“Class of 2026, you have carried stones every single day for the past 13 years,” she said. “You did the small things right.”

Principal Eric Bozoyan reflected on watching the class grow from freshmen into leaders.

“We pushed you, encouraged you, held you accountable and loved you,” Bozoyan said. “You were being prepared for this moment.”

He recognized National Merit Scholars, STAR Students, honor graduates, Salutatorian Leo Choi and Valedictorian Eshaan Patel before presenting the Buford Cup, the school’s highest student honor, to Marcus Rasberry.

Bozoyan reminded graduates that commencement represented not a finish line but a starting point.

“One day, you will look back on this moment — not for what you were leaving behind, but for everything that was just beginning,” he said.

He encouraged the graduates to stay connected to the people who shaped them, pursue their dreams with confidence and never lose sight of the community that helped them succeed.

“Take risks. Embrace challenges. Learn from failure. Celebrate your successes,” Bozoyan said. “And never forget where you came from or the people who helped you get here.”

As the ceremony came to a close, the messages from Watson, Chafin and Bozoyan shared a common theme. Championships, awards and accolades are meaningful, but character, service and the legacy left behind ultimately define success.

“Tonight, we celebrate how far we’ve come,” Watson said. “Tomorrow, we begin discovering how far we can go.”
